The Nereids lived on the seabed, in the palace of their father, Nereus.

The names of the Nereids, as mentioned in the Theogony of Hesiod, refer to the various properties and conditions of the sea. They illustrate the benefits of the sea, the wealth that the sea gives to man and convenience that the sea provides for trade.

The Nereid Iioni was responsible for the bays of the coast.
