Mount Athos

Mount Athos is situated in the entire third, eastern and most beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki, called the peninsula of Athos. It is the only place in Greece that is completely dedicated to prayer and worship of God. For this reason, it is called the Holy Mount.

Each monastery adds with its own history and spirituality in the mosaic of the monastic state. First in class and the oldest of all, built since 963 AD, is the Monastery of Great Lavra. Monastery of Vatopedi and Monastery of Iviron monasteries are included in the most important monasteries. Karyes is the capital and the seat of the spiritual leader of the monasteries, who is elected by the college of abbots.

The only path for the pilgrim who wants to see first hand the divine harmony of the Holy Mountain is through the sea. From the port of Ouranoupolis are taking place daily routes to Dafni, the port of Athos. To stay in one of the monasteries, visitors must procure the special document (diamonitirion) from the competent office in Ouranoupoli.

Finally there is the possibility of cruising the blue waters around Mount Athos and tour of the monasteries, accompanied by dolphins that swim in the area!
